Duvet Sizing Guide: Get the Fit Right the First Time

Standard US duvet sizes run roughly: Twin 68×88”, Full/Queen 88×92”, King/Cal King 104×92” — but dimensions vary by brand, so always check inches, not labels. Two rules cover almost every situation: your duvet should extend 8–12 inches past each side of the mattress for proper drape, and your cover must match your insert's dimensions exactly, within an inch or two.

Rule 1: Drape is measured, not guessed

A duvet that just barely spans the mattress top looks like a napkin on a dinner table and starts the nightly tug-of-war if you share the bed. Add your mattress width to about 20 inches of total overhang and compare against the duvet's real dimensions. Thick mattresses (12–14+ inches) eat drape fast — that's the main reason to size up, and why many queen-bed owners are happier with a king duvet.

Rule 2: Cover and insert must match — exactly

This is the rule that quietly causes most “my duvet is a mess” complaints. A cover even a few inches larger than its insert leaves empty fabric for the insert to wander into; by Wednesday it's balled in a corner. Because brands cut sizes differently, a “queen” cover from one company and a “queen” insert from another can mismatch by four inches. Couples, kids, and the size-up question

• Two adults, queen bed: a king duvet on a queen bed is the most under-recommended comfort upgrade in bedding — everyone gets full coverage and the cover-stealing arms race ends.

• Kids' rooms: twin duvets sized close to the mattress are easier for kids to manage (and for you to wash — they'll need it).

• Guest rooms: standard sizing is fine; guests care more about fresh than oversized.
